L3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship

This apprenticeship is perfect if you want to start a career supporting learners in a school or educational setting. It prepares you for various essential roles, including Learning Support Assistant, Classroom assistant, or SEN Teaching Assistant, focusing on critical skills to provide high-quality support to students and educators.

The Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship has been developed in collaboration with schools and educational professionals to ensure you gain the right skills to make an impact and help meet the diverse needs of today’s learners.

L5 Specialist Teaching Assistant – Launching January 2025

This apprenticeship is ideal if you want to specialise in supporting learners in a school or educational setting, taking on roles that require advanced expertise beyond the typical teaching assistant duties. It’s suited for roles such as a specialist in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), social and emotional well-being support, or curriculum provision.

This standard has been developed to provide schools with a high-quality framework for meeting staffing needs and helping staff grow in their careers. It recognises the significance of specialist support roles within the education sector.

What are the entry requirements for the Apprenticeship?

Eligibility includes:

  • Age: Must be 16 years or older
  • Education: Generally, a minimum of GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths, typically grades 4 (C) or above, or a willingness to undertake English and Maths as part of the programme
  • Experience: This is not required for Teaching Assistant Level 3. However, for Level 5 Teaching Assistant, you must have worked as a Teaching Assistant (TA), Learning Support Assistant (LSA), or equivalent role for at least a year (full-time equivalent)
  • DBS Check: An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check to ensure suitability for working with children
  • Interest in Childcare: A genuine interest in child development and education
  • Right to Work in the UK: You must have lived in England for the last three years and have the right to work in the UK
  • Employment: You must be employed at least 16 hours a week and spend at least 50% of your working hours in England over the duration of the apprenticeship
